Tension gripped the Murshidabad district of West Bengal as a protest against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 turned violent. The unrest broke out in Jangipur when demonstrators clashed with police after their road blockade was stopped by security personnel. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, with protesters vandalizing police vehicles and setting two of them on fire.
The protest was organized in response to the controversial amendments in the Waqf Act that have triggered backlash from certain sections of the Muslim community. What began as a peaceful rally took a violent turn after police attempted to disperse the crowd. In retaliation, some protestors engaged in stone-pelting, torching of vehicles, and creating chaos on the streets.
Police reinforcements were rushed to the area, and efforts were made to bring the situation under control. No casualties have been officially reported, but the incident has heightened communal and political tensions in the region.
Seizing the moment, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Posting on X, Malviya wrote, “West Bengal is once again engulfed in flames... A Muslim mob has taken to the streets in Murshidabad... Mamata Banerjee has lost control over vast areas of Bengal.” His comments have added further fuel to the political fire surrounding the Act.
